The 36 usability criteria included a selection of the e-Gov Watch usability criteria, intended to represent best practice in usability that applies to government websites. The assessors looked at the following on each website to check for usability:

    • Whether the site shows when it was last updated
    • Response times
    • Labelling links
    • Indexes
    • Searching
    • Navigation
    • Look and feel
    • Consistent behaviour
    • Content
    • Language
    • Style and tone
    • 'Chunking' of long documents
    • Broken links
    • Up to date information
    • Help
    • Forms
    • Error messages
